So I made a thing! BTW it’s supposed to be water-cooled with a radiator and a 600cc square four engine just like an old Ariel. It’s supposed to combine the best aesthetic elements of my favorite British, German and Japanese bikes into a casual-riding, 90-degree knee-bend bike.

erm.

no. there is absolutely no value in the square 4 engine over anything else. mainly because of the extra friction and rotating mass of not only a second crank shaft, but the valve train as well.

a I2? sure. a V2? great. a V4? even better. but there is a reason why engines have a single crankshaft, to help reduce frictional loses.

and packaging. think about how long that extra crank shaft is going to be.

this is before we even get to cooling. you want it to be water cooled sure. but running lines and everything you need is going to be a PITFA.
and that motor is going to be HEAVY.

ariel didnt make very many square 4s.

there is a good reason for that.

as for the rest of the bike, you cant just throw in ‘less ugly’ and ‘stuff’ they were designed like that for a reason.

Not to mention this thing would be hotter than hell to sit on. I thought my Duc was bad.

eh, i figure it cant be that bad, seeing as he wants to water cool it. not air cooled

What about one of those swashplate four-cylinders like they use on Torpedos?

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I’m going to take a wild leap and say it wasn’t meant to be a technical diagram. I think he had a few core concepts he was concerned with and the rest is sort of inconsequential. “Eh, just do it like everyone else does” kept the Japanese motorcycle industry going for quite some time. UJM didn’t stand for “unique Japanese Motorcycle” after all.

your going to run into huge wear and tear problems on that. remember, this is a motor that needs to last at least 100K miles. not a 45 second torepdo then kaboom

Oh I didn’t read carefully I just saw fins and assumed air cooled. Hell even the new Panigales are known for having brutally hot seats on warm days and they are liquid cooled.

I think thats more due to the fact the the exhaust runs RIGHT under your ass then the actual motor.

That’s how A/C compressors work. Those last 100K miles in cars just fine. I don’t see why you couldn’t use it for an ICE.

AC isnt on all the time, and its not moving 500 lbs of metal and human.

not to mention, you probably get shit-all for torque in one of those engines

Put enough fairings and Monster logos on it and it might just last 45 seconds before a kaboom.

I like that covered rear section. Very Streamliner.

Some salty folks in here. I for one think it’s great to explore odd ideas.

Here are some designed for use in aircraft and other applications. He does mention that they’re not super reliable, but nobody has really tried.

Exactly but sitting on top of four cylinders is likely to get very hot due to the likely exhaust routes.
